𖤍 Oddin’s Call
Oddin is looking for an experienced Platform Lead to take ownership of our core platform and guide its long-term technical direction. You will be responsible for ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across our systems. Your role includes driving architectural decisions, improving platform tooling, enabling developer productivity, and introducing modern technologies where beneficial.
🌐 What You’ll Work On
- Own Platform Engineering end-to-end (reports to CTO). Accountable for strategy, outcomes, and execution—measured by how effectively Product Engineering can ship and operate.
- Unblock teams. Reduce today’s platform bottlenecks—starting with improving our Terraform foundations (incl. refactoring and better state separation via Terragrunt) and clarifying “how we work” with product teams.
- Run and evolve a mature AWS platform. Improve reliability, delivery safety, and cost efficiency without “rewriting from scratch.”
- Lead platform streams and sequencing (now and next):
- Current Platform Support (now): operate the existing platform and keep teams moving.
- Platform 2.0 (now →): own the strategy/roadmap; coordinate design decisions and begin delivery while current platform continues.
- SRE (now): strengthen incidents/observability; hire and establish ownership.
- Security + Developer Experience (planned 2026 H2): build the path and hire as scope expands.
- IT Support: collaborate with the IT support team and assess gradual integration into Platform.
- Scale the team. Lead ~5 infra/platform engineers and grow to ~10; set clear goals, run ceremonies, and deliver through ambiguity.
- Define the engagement model with Product Engineering. Our goal is clear: product teams handle ~95% of regular infra work for their services independently (including their day-to-day infra changes), with Platform providing paved roads, guardrails, and escalation support.
- Adopt pragmatic innovation (incl. GenAI). Use GenAI to reduce toil in knowledge-heavy workflows (e.g., Terraform reviews, runbooks, incident analysis) while maintaining safety.
🧩 Skills You’ll Need
- Relevant scale-up Platform leadership (must-have). You’ve led or helped build Platform Engineering in a SaaS product company, generic infrastructure/IT experience is not enough for this role.
- Strong AWS + Terraform experience at scale (must-have). Proven experience with AWS + Terraform supporting 100+ services/workloads (or comparable complexity). Practical exposure to Terragrunt / multi-state / module strategy and the reality of Terraform tech debt in fast-growing orgs.
- People leadership and team building. Experience leading engineers, setting goals, coaching, running performance cycles, and scaling a team (including hiring for SRE now, and Security/DX later).
- Execution and alignment over “being the smartest architect.” You can set direction, translate Product Engineering needs into clear goals, run roadmaps/ceremonies, manage tradeoffs, and land outcomes. You’re technical enough to feel the pain and lead the work—but you don’t need to be a Staff-level infra implementer.
- Operating cadence and stakeholder leadership. You can run effective ceremonies/offsites and establish a durable operating model with Product Engineering: intake, prioritization, ownership boundaries, escalation paths, and expectations.
- Written and executive communication. You write crisp 1-pagers, decision memos, and updates that align teams and prevent thrash.
- Reliability and operations leadership. You understand incident management, post-mortems, observability principles, and how to mature toward SLO/SLA practices over time.
- Cost and guardrails mindset. You can set budgets/guardrails and cost practices while keeping accountability with Product Engineering for their service bills.
- Pragmatic innovation in an existing platform. You improve and modernize a live system thoughtfully—evolution over revolution.
